Continuing Professional Competency (CPC) Requirements

Continuing Education or PDH is known as CPC in Maryland

Professional Development Options, parent company of NoonPi, is approved by the Maryland State Board for Professional Engineers as a provider of continuing education for professional engineers.

Rules for continuing education for Maryland was revised as of January 1, 2018. Here is a summary of the engineering continuing education requirements mandated by the Maryland State Board for Professional Engineers.

Maryland Engineers PE PDH

Hours Required

16 PDH biennially. One of the required PDH must cover the topic of ethics.

Based on the licensee's date of birth

Board Approval

Maryland requires that courses be taken from a pre-approved sponsor. Professional Development Options, parent company of NoonPi, has been approved as a provider of continuing education for Maryland PEs.

The catalog on this website lists courses and webinars by Topic Areas. Due to Board restrictions on content, you should avoid earning your PDH in the Topic Areas listed above.

The required hours must be earned from the participation in and completion of qualified programs described as:

  • Technical, research, analytical, or design aspects of engineering
  • Laws and regulations applicable to the practice of engineering in Maryland
  • Engineering-related computer hardware and software topics
  • Standards of practice or care
  • Professional engineering ethics
  • Project management, risk assessment and management, or emergency and disaster management
  • Similar topics aimed to maintain, improve, or expand the skills and knowledge relevant to the licensee's field of practice

A minimum of 1 PDH must be earned in the area of ethics, which can include:

  • The awareness of ethical concerns and conflicts related to the practice of engineering
  • An enhanced familiarity with the code of conduct for professional engineers
  • An understanding of standards of practice or care related to the practice of engineering, or
  • Laws and regulations applicable to the practice of engineering in Maryland

Approved Activities

Online continuing education from approved providers is specifically accepted under Maryland's rules. There is no limit on the number of hours that can be earned using online courses.

PDH Carryover

A maximum of 8 PDH can be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Notes

  1. A dual-licensed engineer/surveyor shall comply with the CPC requirements set forth in COMAR 09.13.08 applicable to licensed professional land or property line surveyors, except that a minimum of one-third of the units earned shall be gained from the qualifying programs on engineering-related topics.
  2. PDH completion records must be maintained for a minimum of 4 years.
